Top VPNs India Review 2017 – PC/Android/Mac/Gaming

Greetings! As someone who has Indian Guyspent his entire life in India and seen how restrictive the country can be when it comes to the internet, I felt it was important to put together a list of the best VPNs in India.

It’s smart to use a VPN no matter where you are, but the way the Indian government, and in particular the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT), operates makes it even more important. Through the Lawful Intercept and Monitoring (LIM) program, the Indian government can conduct mass surveillance of everyone’s internet activities without much oversight.

Besides the strong possibility of having your activity monitored if you don’t use a VPN, there’s also the fact that thousands of sites are blocked by the Indian government. With a VPN, you can browse safely and access sites that would otherwise be censored.

A Word of Warning on Free VPNs

There are plenty of free VPNs out there, but this is one area where you get what you pay for. Those free VPNs collect information on their users and sell it to third parties, which is why they can operate without charging users a fee. Considering the point of a VPN is keeping your information safe, there’s no good reason to choose a free VPN.

With that out of the way, let’s get to the VPN recommendations. I’ve used plenty of them in my quest for internet security, and this list includes the three best VPNs I’ve found, plus one popular VPN that I’d recommend you avoid.

Avoid Free VPNS - Don't Have Your Info Sold to 3rd Parties
I would strongly recommend not utilizing free VPNS servers for some simple reasons. User data is routed through a central hub that collects and aggregates information. This information is then sold to 3rd parties. User information is commoditized and sold to pay for the “free” VPN. If you’re not looking to spend money on a VPN, I would suggest simply not using one.

1. Express VPN – Fastest and Most Secure

Express VPN LogoWhen I evaluate a VPN, there are two boxes it needs to check off to justify a monthly fee. It needs to be fast enough that I can still stream videos without dealing with buffering or quality issues. And it needs to keep my internet activity private. Express VPN checks off both boxes, and you can use it with all your devices.

Express VPN has servers spread across 94 nations, which is great for accessing content that’s only available in certain areas, and it also helps Express VPN deliver that topnotch speed that it’s known for. It also has strong 256-bit encryption that prevents cybercriminals from stealing any of your information, and best of all, it doesn’t keep any logs of your activities.

This VPN has a live chat available around the clock if you have any questions or issues, and it provides high-quality customer service. The only drawback with Express VPN is that it will cost you a couple dollars more per month than many other VPNs, as its 12-month plan still has a monthly fee of $8.32. This is one of those situations where you get what you pay for, though, and there’s a 30-day moneyback guarantee in case you decide to go with something else.

2. VyprVPN – The Second-Best Option for PCs and Androids

Vypr VPNVyprVPN has servers in over 70 countries, and what makes it unique is that it has full ownership of its entire network, which you won’t find with many other VPNs. Not only does this ensure your data has maximum security, but it also results in excellent connection speeds.

This VPN provides unlimited streaming and downloading, combining to make it a great choice for streaming videos, as long as your internet connection is up to the task. You can use VyprVPN with up to three of your devices, and it has an excellent Android app.

Like ExpressVPN, VyprVPN has 24/7 customer support and a 30-day moneyback guarantee. Another unique benefit is its Chameleon Stealth Technology, which is made to get through government firewalls. The base VyprVPN plan is $5 per month when you sign up for a year, or you can get the VyprVPN Premium plan for $6.67 per month with a 12-month commitment.

3. PureVPN – A Solid Runner Up

Pure VPN LogoPureVPN may not be my personal favorite VPN in India, but it’s still a very good choice, especially if you’re trying to keep your monthly costs down. It has more than 750 servers across over 140 countries, and its security is excellent, with high-level encryption and army-graded protocols.

You can use PureVPN with just about any type of device, and if you run into any problems, there’s always support available via live chat. The moneyback guarantee isn’t nearly as long as the previous two VPNs on this list, lasting seven days instead of 30, but that still gives you some time to try it out. The pricing is one area where PureVPN is very competitive, as it costs just $5.75 per month when you get a full year of service.

4. Hide My Ass – The Least-Recommended VPN

HideMyAss LogoWhen it comes to Hide My Ass, the quality of this VPN unfortunately doesn’t match the popularity. It certainly has quite a few customers and some redeeming qualities, but anyone who really knows VPNs will tell you that you’re better off avoiding Hide My Ass.

To its credit, Hide My Ass has servers in more than 190 countries, the speed is good and there’s a 30-day moneyback guarantee. It isn’t too costly, either, with the 12-month plan running $6.56 per month. So, considering those benefits and the cost, what’s the problem with Hide My Ass?

This comes back to the fact that the most important aspect of a VPN is how well it protects your information, and Hide My Ass doesn’t have a good reputation there. Since Hide My Ass is based in the United Kingdom, it must abide by the UK’s surveillance laws, and those include requirements that VPN providers keep customer logs.

There have been multiple examples over the years of Hide My Ass providing customer data to law enforcement. One high-profile example of this was in 2011, when Hide My Ass provided info on Cody Kretsinger, who was accused of hacking Sony. You may not have any problems using Hide My Ass, but it’s safer to choose another VPN.

This is a bare bones VPN with a bad reputation among VPN users. There are zero advanced features, absolutely no ad-blocking and sessions logs are managed by the company behind this service. This is no one’s first choice for a reliable VPN.

What is a VPN?

how-vpn-protects-youVPN stands for “virtual private network,” and a VPN provider will have servers available for customers to connect to. When data gets uploaded or downloaded from your computer while it’s connected to the VPN, it is encrypted first. If anyone looked at your IP address, it would show the address of the VPN server your computer is connected to instead of your computer’s actual IP address.

Why Do I Need a VPN?

There are several reasons why it’s a good idea to use a VPN.

how-encryption-worksFirst and foremost, there’s protection for surveillance when you use a VPN. As I mentioned before, internet surveillance is rampant here in India, and if you don’t use a VPN, the government or your ISP could monitor and record your online activities.

You have access to far more sites and content when you use a VPN, because you can browse the internet as if you were at the location of the server. With most VPNs having servers in many different countries, you have more browsing options available. For example, you could connect to a server in the United States to take advantage of the Netflix library there. This can also help you get around the extreme website censorship in India.

Finally, a VPN is a great way to stay safe when you’re using public Wi-Fi. Free Wi-Fi has become much more plentiful throughout India in recent years, but any time you use public Wi-Fi, there’s the risk of hackers stealing your data. With a VPN, you don’t need to worry about this because of the data encryption.

Are VPNs Safe To Use?

The answer to this question depends on the VPN you choose.

how hackers can steal your informationLet’s start with the easy part – is it legal to use a VPN, or could you get in legal trouble for doing so? It’s legal to use a VPN just about anywhere in the world, including India, which means you’re fine in that regard.

Now for the trickier part – safety in regards to your information. This all depends on the VPN provider you choose. If you stick with the top three choices I listed above, then you’ll be safe. If you use some random VPN that you know nothing about, you could be at risk for viruses or theft of your data. This is especially common with those free VPNs.

Can I Use a VPN on my Phone or Tablet?

With any somewhat-recent device, you can connect to a VPN. Just about every VPN provider supports devices that run Android and iOS. You shouldn’t have trouble connecting a Windows Phone, either, but some of the older Blackberry models can be hit or miss. A flip phone from 2002 probably won’t cut it, though!

The only thing to be aware of when you connect to a VPN with a phone or tablet is that apps typically send all kinds of personal information, and a VPN can’t stop this from happening. To keep your information safe, your best bet is choosing web portal services on your device’s mobile browser instead of opening any apps.

My Final Thoughts

Even though VPNs may seem a bit complicated, most are very user-friendly and easy to set up, including my three choices for the best VPNs in India. Considering how simple it is to get started and the low price, it’s well worth it to find a VPN you like. Take advantage of those trial periods and see which one works best for you. You’ll be able to get around India’s internet censorship and have the peace of mind that comes with knowing your information is secure.
